Nothing happens when I press the buttons for on/off functions even though there is 12 Volt when I measure?

Although there is voltage, it may be that when the magnets are switched on, it drops to a level that is so low that no function can be performed. To check the incoming voltage (in the socket or the cable from the tractor), you can connect, for example, a lamp that is at min. 30 Watt. The voltage in this case must not be less than 12 volts. If the voltage drops, check that both the positive and negative supplies are correctly connected.

It is not uncommon for the connection to minus to be the problem!

Is there a guide to help me choose the right trailer and crane for my needs?
Here are 9 steps to help you build your FTG forest trailer

We can offer trailers from 9-15 tonnes with or without drive. The choice of trailer you make is based on your specific needs. The size of the trailer is usually adapted so that the tractor (most commonly 70-90hp) and trailer together form a good team and suit your needs and terrain. If you have hilly terrain, very wet land, drive on the trailer may be necessary. We offer drive on the 10-tonne wagons and up where we mostly sell ‘Robson drive’ a roller that drives on all 4 wheels, but we can also offer hub drive on the rear pair of wheels on the 12-tonne trailer. An advantage of hub drive is that you can mount chains and tracks. If you want advice and tips, ask your dealer or us!

Now that you have chosen your trailer, there are some customised options on cranes for each. The choice you make depends a lot on what reach and lifting capacity you need, but today telescopic cranes are mostly sold on 10-tonne trailers and up. If we look at the 9-tonne trailer, it is 50/50 with or without a telescope. If you want advice and tips, ask your dealer or us!

On each crane, we have as standard given a proposal for a rotator and grip, but here you can adapt and get exactly the equipment you want. However, most people choose to take the proposal we made. However, an option that most people make is to get a braked link on the rotator (the grapple ‘swings’ less)

How the crane is controlled is determined by the valve package you choose and as standard on all cranes the multi-lever valve is included (max flow 50 l/min) and on the driven multi-lever valve Parker P70 (for higher flow than 50 l/min) where you have the entire valve package in the cab. Some are used to it for many years and do not want to change, but most people today choose an alternative valve package as it has been developed a lot and the old multi-package is very heavy to handle. Most common on the non-driven trailers today is the lightweight valve (2-lever max flow 50l) where you have half the package in the tractor and half in the crane pallet, which makes it easy to handle and 2-lever is easy to operate. Even more advanced packages are PCL (low pressure servo), EHC (Electrohydraulic) and Scanreco radio control and these are chosen for the driven trailers with higher flow (70-90l) but also for the non-driven.

Winch with radio control is chosen today for virtually all trailers. We have 2 different 1410 (6 mm wire 35 m) which is the most common or 1810 (8 mm wire 30 m) with optional placement in crane pallet (most common) or in crane arm. On the crane arm there is also a bracket where you can choose an open break block for high pull point.

Support legs (telescopic) are standard on the 9-tonne trailer but are an option most people choose on the 10-12 tonne trailers. On the 14/15 tonne trailers there are optional flap down support legs but here some choose to do without. On all trailers today you can get fluid-filled tyres that make the trailer even more stable.

If you have chosen a trailer with drive and do not have an LS pump on the tractor or a larger oumo/double pump, a separate hydraulic system is required. Here are some options depending on the trailer and tractor.

When we have come this far with the choice of equipment, the question is whether the trailer needs brakes. A hilly terrain or if you are going to drive on the road with loads etc. can be arguments for choosing brakes. Without brakes, a large/heavy tractor and a smaller trailer are required to drive on the road at all. We can offer disc brakes (most common) but also drum brakes.

Some examples of other common options that are made are toolbox, chainsaw holder, LED lighting on the crane, etc.
Why should I choose a Mowi trailer?

If you are a person who appreciates a high quality trailer from a company with long experience of forest trailers and Swedish forestry. The Mowi trailer with the unique parallel crane developed by Wiking Gunnarsson began to be manufactured by Wikhede Mekaniska in the small village of Bäckefors in Dalsland in the early 80s and is today one of the leading brands in the Nordic region.

We have trailers from 9 tonnes up to 15 tonnes, everything for both small forest owners users to professionals.

On a Mowi trailer there is always the unique parallel crane that does ‘2 moments in 1’ – ‘lifts and pulls’ but also requires the lowest oil flow on the market, which means that you can run the tractor at low revs. The crane is made of high-strength steel and designed to last for many years.

A good grade on our trailers developed for the Nordic forestry is the high resale value that we see on the second-hand market, this means that the total economy of your equipment is low.

Which crane is suitable for the Mowi trailer I intend to buy?

What oils and greases should I use for my trailer and crane?

The following oils and greases should be used for our trailers and cranes

Crankcase oil – Geartex EPC 80W/90

Hydraulic oil for tractor hydraulics – Super Universal Tractor Oil Extra 10W/30. The oil is controlled by the tractor’s requirements, but the trailer is delivered from FTG with the specified oil.

Hydraulic oil for pump and tank – Rando HDZ46 (Mineral oil) or Q8 Holbein BioPlus ISO46 (Bio oil)

How often should the oil be changed in the slew motor and how much does it cost?

The oil in the slew motor should be changed for the first time after 500 hours or 1 year. Then every 2000 hours or 5 years.

The oil to be used is Geartex EPC 80W/90 and to refill the entire slew motor it takes about 3.5 litres (different volume depending on the slew motor).

If the rotary cylinders have been dismantled when replacing seals, for example, it is important that the slew motor is moved back and forth a few times to ensure that the pistons are in the correct position against the rack. Then check the level again.
How often should I change the hydraulic filter?

Hydraulic oil filters should be changed when the filter indicator shows red with hot oil or when changing the oil. Depending on the type of hydraulic system, both pressure and return filters may be present.

For trailers with pump and tank, the following intervals apply. For others that are driven via the tractor’s hydraulics, these intervals apply

The hydraulic oil must be changed for the first time after 500 hours and then once a year or 1000 hours.

The crane feels weak on the rotation. Is there anything I can do about it?

The easiest way to assess whether the slew force is the right one is to check the pressure to the slewing cylinders. If the pressure is there, the slewing force is according to the predetermined specification for each model.

The pressures for the slewing function are given in the valve specification in the instruction manual. The tolerance on the shock valves is about +/- 10%.
Can I make the crane stronger?

FTG cranes are normally supplied with pre-set valves. These provide a predetermined lifting capacity according to the set specification. If the lifting capacity is noticeably reduced, there may be a fault in the hydraulic system, in which case the safest way to check whether everything is correct is to measure the pressure for each function.

The current pressure for each function is shown in the instruction manual. The tolerance on the shock valves is about +/- 10%.

Under no circumstances should the pressure settings be adjusted upwards, as this will jeopardise the service life of the crane and there is a risk of breakdown.

The production of Mowi started in 1980 at Wikhede Mekaniska in Bäckefors, Dalsland. The trailers is still produced at the same location today by FTG Cranes AB

What do minimum current, maximum current and ramp mean in the settings of my EHC mini-lever system?

A brief description of the EHC system settings

On delivery there is a basic setting but to get the most out of the system it needs to be adjusted

Minimum current:

This setting determines when the tap should start moving. The mincurrent setting is important to get a lever that reacts quickly to the movement you make. In general, it can be said that a lifting movement needs a higher set value than a lowering movement. A too high min-current setting can give a jerky start of the movement

Maximum current:

The set value for maximum current indicates how fast the function will run when the lever is fully depressed. A tip can be to set the maximum current on, for example, gripe and lower it on swing and rotator if you want a higher precision.

Ramp Up:

Ramp Up sets the time it takes to reach the maximum current when you move the lever from neutral to full travel. A good starting point is 0 – 0.2 seconds.

Ramp Down:

Ramp Down is the opposite and sets the time it takes to go from max current to min current when you move the lever from full travel to neutral. A good starting point is 0 – 0.2 seconds.

Tip:

There is the possibility to set three different driver choices (1 – 2 – 3). A tip is to set the different driver choices according to what you are going to do. For example, 1: for handling timber (more precision) and 2: for handling rice (the speed of the functions can be set up in speed)
